ABOUT US

The NMT Academy offers theoretical and practical training in all aspects of vessel operation and maintenance and provides crew training that maximizes vessel operation. The Academy has South African Maritime Safety Authority accreditation for a number of courses relating to Certificates of Competences.

Besides our commitment to offering you the best training possible, we specialize in training for both individuals or groups. Our expert training will ensure that you achieve the standards required whilst having the adventure of a lifetime.

The academy is headed by Neil de Villiers and Ian Allison who have years of experience as  captains and has a variety of ocean crossings under the belts.

WHAT WE OFFER

BASIC, ADVANCED AND CAREER LICENCES

Inland Waters License

This certificate certifies that the candidate has the knowledge to skipper, during daylight hours on sheltered inland waters like dams, rivers and estuary’s on vessels over or under 9 meters.

1Nm Offshore Licence

This certificate certifies that the candidate has the knowledge

to skipper offshore vessels of over or under 9 meters upto 1 Nautical Mile from shore.

15 Nm Mile Offshore Licence

This certificate certifies that the candidate has demonstrated the knowledge to skipper a motor driven vessel up to 15 Nautical Miles offshore. 

Classes are done about every second or third Saturday morning or as the demand arises. An exam and the practical is done every 2 – 3 weeks at the Nautic building.

The practical is done at Oceana Power Boat Club in the Waterfront, which is about 10 min drive from the exam venue. The class, exam and practical is only done once and the SAMSA certificate is valid for life. The course is not difficult and we are often told that the course is informative and interesting. For those doing Cat C-Training charts are available on the day of the lecture at an additional cost of R150.00


ONE ON ONE SKIPPER CLASSES (if applicable)

If you want me to lecture you one on one add R1500 to the above price. One or two people classes are much faster to complete because of the direct lecture and less amount of general questions. The R1500 extra per person on scheduled classes at our classroom does not apply at all.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

YOUR VENUE

If you want me to come do the skipper class at your venue ( office, home, clubhouse, boardroom ect. ) add R1500 to the above price per person. A 1 or 2 person class is much faster to complete because of the direct lecture and less questions. If you are a group at your venue then the added fee sometimes does not apply but there might be a travel fee if we have to travel long distances.

This can be negotiated with the lecturer.


CLASS AND EXAM VENUE

Our lecture and exam venue is situated in the Viking building on the corner of Neptune and Carlisle st in Paarden Eiland.

Lectures or examinations starts at 09:00 on a Saturday.

Please use the entrance in Carlisle street by calling on the security guard at the main gate.


HOURS

A person needs to have spent 25 hours on a boat or jetski as a skipper, crewmember or as a passenger before he / she is allowed to do the examination.

If a person wants a Inland Waters licence then any 25 hours on board a  South African registered boat or jetski at sea or inland water can be used.

If a person wants a 1 Nautical Mile offshore licence then their 25 hours need to have been on a  South African registered boat or jetski at sea.

THE PAPERWORK NEEDED ON THE DAY OF THE EXAM


  • 4  X  Colour ID size small photographs.


  • 2  X  Certified clear colour copies of your ID. (Must have date stamp and not be older than 3 months)


  • 1  X  Annexure 16 – List of +-25 Hours spent on the water


  • 1  X  Annexure 17 – Doctors including Eyesight with practice stamp


  • 1  X  Copy of the skipper licence of the person who signs off you hours if you follow the 25 hours seatime option.


  • The Annex 16 form has to be completed in a very specific way, this will be explained in detail on the day when we meet for the class.


NONE of the above list of photos or copy of ID or completed papers need to be handed in on the day of the CLASS, it is only needed on the day of the EXAM. The Inland, 1 Nautical Mile or 15 NMile people only do one class and one exam. As per legislation in SA the class and the exam may not be done on the same day. Classes and exam sittings are done depending on demand about every 2nd to 3rd week, all of the above will be explained on the day of the class.

We do additional on the water training for individual people or groups involved in sport and recreation boating. We build and repair boats and specialize in training military’s, police, special forces, navies, divers and personnel from the oil and gas industries.

The class, exam and practical is only done once and the (SAMSA) skipper certificate is valid for life.The course is not difficult, we are often told that the course is informative and interesting and you may ask any of your general boating questions as we proceed.

ALL you will need on the day of the class is a pen.

  • The above is the full price for the complete course and includes the SAMSA fee, class, lecturer, venue, books, exam, examiner, exam venue, practical and the use of our boat for the practical all included.
